I think you're right daveyg in that Collins wouldn't have got there. He would have tried though because it is ingrained in him to try...

Ogbonna's reaction was to stand and watch. I think that is what Juventus fans mean when they say he goes to sleep... Funny but I feel less worried about Donneil Henry than Ogbonna yet Ogbonna looks the dogs in every other respect.

I think (well hope) that the fact we have been playing competitive matches rather than just friendlies will make a difference... we should be sharper than other teams. I know it hasn't showed so far(!) but I think it will over the next couple of weeks.

Arsenal have been slow starters on the first day for the last couple of years at home... let's hope it continues.

Collins wouldn't off got to the ball as he would of already been sent off having wrecklessly fouled Ujah twice already.
Collins is far to slow to be playing at this level now.
As soon as he was booked last Thursday it was obvious he would get a 2nd yellow

Willtell 10:43 Mon Aug 3
Re: West Ham v Werder Bremen Betway Cup 1-2
I've just looked at that 2nd goal again. It happened very fast but Ujah gets a bounce off Tomkins who immediately turns to get goalside but Ujah was too quick for him.

It all happened quickly but Ogbonna stood and watched. He wasn't even thinking of moving back to cover. It's those split second decisions that make the difference between a last ditch block and a goal.

I think Collins in that position would have kept moving looking for a chance to make a last ditch block. I like defenders to be automatically covering each other. Not standing watching...

Everything else about Ogbonna's game looked great but that lack of a defender's instinct to get back worries me. Juventus fans said he goes to sleep and maybe I am looking for it but I hope we haven't bought a Bramble or Dunne...

Apart from the injuries (& suspensions) the only other thing I would have preferred would be for the Euro game not to be this midweek so that we could have put a full strength team together for a couple of games.
An ideal preseason for me would be a fitness camp in somewhere like Austria with a couple of lowkey games, some tougher games close to home and a couple of competitive games like these Europa qualifiers.
The number of qualifiers for a tin pot competition like the Europa league is ludicrous but that's another matter.

To me the worst preseason is flying to America, Australia, NZ & sweaty Asian hellholes to sell shirts.
The bigger teams seem to have turned preseason into a marketing exercise playing amongst themselves which I am sure wouldn't be the choice of the managers on footballing criteria.

I think our preseason has been better than I can remember.

Game time for all players and often not in rubbish friendlies but games that have meant something so not just getting physically ready but mentally also.

No silly pointless travelling. The Europa away games have all been fairly close and the Friendlies have been chosen with short travel distances in mind.

We are playing better football already than we are used to and the new signings were got in nice and early to have started to gel with the team.

Could not give a toss about friendly results, it is the furthest thing down the list of things the manager will be concerned about and rightly so.

He has had a good chance to look at all players and identify what needs strengthening before window closes.

Only negatives at all for me are the injuries to Obiang and Valencia. Other than that it has been spot on.

BFS would have put the kids out in the first round and not cared about the cup.

Bilic had taken us to our first final in years and has only been here a few weeks.

Well let's hope so, as he better be good if he's gonna bench Tomkins.

What concerns me more is that appyhammer thought it a good idea to spend a score + to watch that dross yesterday.

Because Bilic has watched him and wanted him for years.

And since Chester just went for similar money even if he just replaces Ginge, who seems to be showing a bit of age, it is a decent deal.

But I think with a bit of time to adjust he will be just a good as players we were quoted 15-20m for. He makes many important things look very easy.

I still can't understand why we have bought Ogbonna and for a large chunk of our budget?

Re: West Ham v Werder Bremen Betway Cup 1-2
Cant agree with that.

Ogbonna was very good yesterday. Tomkins failed to clear it and Ogbonna was also covering the player to the right of the play.

He also mopped up everything that came near him Yesterday. You are right in saying he is a beast and I think both him and Reid will be our CB pairing going forward.

Ginge, Henry and Tonka will have to fight it out for third...

Re: West Ham v Werder Bremen Betway Cup 1-2
Been very pleased with Oxford, Cullen, Samuelson & Page in the games I've seen. A nice mix of good youngsters there in a variety of positions.

Noble had looked better against Norwich & Astra but yesterday he was poor again. Shame we haven't seen much of Obiang yet. Thought Spiegel did everything he could yesterday too actually.

Why Titus Bramble and not Richard Dunne?
Is it because he is a black bloke?

Willtell 10:06 Mon Aug 3
Re: West Ham v Werder Bremen Betway Cup 1-2
I find that the lack of a steady defence is a worry. Ogbonna was brought in to improve things and although he looks a beast he doesn't have that defender's instinct that puts him in a position of safety.

If you get a chance to look at the 2nd goal again Ogbonna stood back for Tomkins to clear. Unfortunately, he stood in a position which was the wrong side of the forward that scored. Natural defenders don't do that - they drop a step or two back just in case...

It was also Ogbonna that scored from a sliced clearance against Astra. I played as a CB until I was in my forties and in all those years I cannot remember once scoring an OG. Obviously different levels but I do worry that Ogbonna is a bit of a Titus Bramble. Strong, powerful, quick and the one that makes high profile errors...

Re: West Ham v Werder Bremen Betway Cup 1-2
I think the preseason has been tough. Split squad to begin, games that matter more than usual.

It is a very different system but despite that I don't see players struggling that much more. The mediocre ones have looked mediocre and some of the decent ones have looked better at points Zarate and Noble for me. Collins might be one who has looked worse but it might be age.

The talk of leftover dross is a bit overdone I think. We have been a midtable side for 3 seasons with these players and unless people are thinking we are going to make dramatic jump from that, most are fine. We have generally made positive changes on the squad.

I also think our view of the youngsters is a bit skewed because they have played in games we have cared about and there have been more games this preseason (4 in 8 days last week). It is not like we have not had them playing in the preseason before. It is certainly one positive in what has been a bit of crazy situation.
